A Unified Approach to Performance in the Offseason

Making the Offseason Count: A powerful, productive approach to communication can help players and teams get more from the offseason.

Every team we talk to is unique in their own way, but regardless of country, sport, volume of data, or amount of technology in place, there is a common theme that comes up in almost every discussion about improving: Teams want to drive collaborative conversations that take into account the complete view of players, but the information needed to create this unified approach to performance and health is scattered across the organization or stuck in silos.

The awareness of this as a problem seems to be more acute than ever. Why? Teams are recognizing that if everyone is working off of the same playbook, then the end product is better.

But bringing data together so these conversations can happen across departments and with athletes when they need to happen is a serious challenge.

A critical “when” that we’ve been hearing about quite a bit this year is the end of the season. Performance staff are trying to organize holistic player profiles and trends, so that they can have individual conversations with players (and their non-team trainers) to best capitalize on the offseason opportunity.

Separate Ways, Separate Plans

With many teams unable to mandate offseason training plans, it is all too easy for players and their trainers to focus on developing physical capabilities that are different from what would be prioritized by the team.

Without a shared view of what would best strengthen their game, improve their physical profile and reduce injury risk, players might adopt divergent philosophical approaches, sacrificing gains earned through months of aligned, in-season effort.

This leads to lost opportunities — but it doesn’t have to.

A More Powerful,Productive Approach

But what if players, trainers, and teams could create collaborative, offseason plans to align around what they all agree is most important?

What if those conversations could clearly articulate, for each individual, the areas they needed to focus on and why, in a way that is easy to understand.

If so, they could actually start the next season stronger relative to where they were.

The Offseason Planning Dashboard:
Creating a Unified View for a Unified Plan

To help a number of teams who wanted to create their shared playbook for offseason success, our Performance Experts went to work and configured a set of Offseason Planning Dashboards – by position – that would highlight key performance, health, physical, wellness status, trends and goals.

Our approach – make it easy so, coaches, staff, and trainers to spend less time gathering information and more time working directly with athletes on what matters most.

Marrying Data with Coaching Experience and Instinct

This type of dashboard creates space for staff and players to unite around data and have open, productive conversations that unlock offseason potential for each player’s unique situation and the team’s overall goals.

Armed with in-depth data about strengths and weaknesses and where players are gaining or losing ground, coaches can use their deep experience and rich instincts to collaboratively create individualized plans. Providing specifics increases buy-in across the board as athletes gain context on how specific asks serve their game, their careers and their value.

This process is scalable in just a few clicks to tens, even hundreds of athletes across multiple positions, each with their own KPIs.

Solid bases of strength and power can be maintained. Gaps can be filled. Offseason injuries can be reduced. Better recovery habits and strategies can be identified before they’re even needed.

The result: Players enter training camp stronger, safer, and better prepared to perform.
