Elite racing is beginning to adopt the data-led methods that reshaped human sport. In a recent Racing Post feature by Peter Scargill, looking at leading stables including those of Aidan and Joseph O’Brien, Kitman Labs Founder & CEO Stephen Smith sets out why the opportunity for the horse is only starting to be realised.
His argument is that the principles are shared. The same markers that drive human performance apply to the horse: intake, weight, power output, speed. Progress can come quickly once teams begin to measure and learn from them.
Smith also makes a practical case for owners and trainers. Data helps teams catch issues before clinical signs appear and recognise which young horses carry the markers of top-tier ability, and as he sees it, investing heavily in horses without the data to learn from outcomes is a missed opportunity.
